Today, we’re going over “Dynamic Date Parameters In Tableau“. Here we have a simple line chart showing sales by month for each segment, using the sample superstore data set. The question is, is what if your user wants to view this line chart by day, week or by month. Currently, it’s defaulted to the month view. First, let’s build out the parameter that allows them to toggle between the three.

Building the Parameters in Tableau

00:33

Today, we’re going over “Dynamic Date Parameters In Tableau“. Here we have a simple line chart showing sales by month for each segment, using the sample superstore data set. The question is, is what if your user wants to view this line chart by day, week or by month. Currently, it’s defaulted to the month view. First, let’s build out the parameter that allows them to toggle between the three.

01:01

Change this to date parameter, Data type to string. In this list, we’re going to type in day, week and month. If you have multiple years in your data set that you want, as an option, you can add that here. Show this parameter, move over here, change this to a single value list. As you can see, that doesn’t do anything yet, because we haven’t added it to our view.

Building Out Date Dimensions

01:33

Next step is to build out that date dimension to place on the sheet for that parameter to control. I’ve created this calculation for this use, which we will add to the description in the video for you to copy and paste. What it does is it takes this date parameter that we just created. And if we’ve selected a day, it’s going to give us the day view for the order date. Same thing for the week, the week view in order date, the month, the month in the order date.

02:04

Let’s rename this date level. Now what we want to replace is this continuous month pill here, with the day level that we just created. Instead of the default year, we’re going to select the exact date. As you can see, when I go back, this is the same view using that date level that we just created. If your user wants to look at the week view, they now have that option along with day.

That wraps up today’s video on dynamic date parameters in Tableau. If you have any questions or suggestions for future videos, please comment below. Don’t forget to subscribe to know when future videos are posted. Thanks for watching.
